Björn & Vildmark meets KTHs iPack researchers.
Thanks to a lucky coincidence, the researchers from iPack Vinn Excellence Center at KTH Stockholm have started a collaboration with the Scandinavian Bear Research Project.
The research center offers support for the field studies of Andrea Friebe - owner of Björn & Vildmark and PhD student in the Scandinavian Brown Bear Research Project via University of Frankfurt, in Germany. For enhanced communication and to learn about the framework of
the
field research, the PhD-students Zhibo Pang and Zhi Zhang visited us and joined a crash course about bear research practice. Finally, they needed to climb into a recently used winter den of a female bear that was giving birth to three cubs inside during winter 2009/10 .
"Zhi Zhang and Zhibo Pang will enable us to get hibernation data from wildlife bears we did not dare to dream of before!" says Gunther Schmidt.
Their sensor data will be matched with activity data in the actual bear collars to learn about the complex processes that are going on during hibernation period. Hopefully we will be able to use a collar edition of the sensors during winter 2011/12 on some wild bears. During winter 2010/11 we wiil be doing a prestudy in the bear park Orsa Grönklitt where we try to collect as much experience as possible for the field study one year later.
